I recently had a photo shoot with Layla, and yes, turns out she was in fact named after the song by Eric Clapton! It’s no wonder that Layla has music in her blood and has played the flute for many years. Our plan was to shoot some artistic images of her with her instrument. We initially planned for an indoor shoot however plans changed and we found ourselves outside. Searching for that perfect location, one road detour and friendly policeman later, we arrived at a lakeside park that fit perfectly. At first I was concerned that the bright midday sun would be problematic to the images and mood I wanted to convey, but with a little thought and problem solving, all worked out really terrific.
Sometime into the shoot it occurred to me that I was having Layla “pose” as if playing the flute. I asked her if she would play a few notes for real. Besides the occasional dog walker, we pretty much had the park to ourselves and it was very quiet. Layla played a few short notes and they seemed to carry and fill the desolate park. Watching her play through the lens of my camera was surreal, it felt like I was in a scene of a movie!
